What this calculator assumes

Every estimate depends on figures that vary by supplier and conditions. These are the ones used here, so you can sanity-check the result against your own quote.

  • The count is one stud per spacing interval plus one to close the end of the wall. It excludes corner backing, king and jack studs, cripples and headers — add those with the extras field, or use the framing calculator.
  • Spacing is on centre, meaning centre of stud to centre of stud. Layout is normally marked from one end so sheathing edges land on a stud.
  • 19.2 in on centre gives exactly 5 bays per 8 ft sheet and appears on tape measures as the black diamond marks.
  • Stud spacing for load-bearing walls is governed by code and depends on stud size, height and load. This is a count, not a structural check.

Frequently asked questions

How many studs do I need for a 12 foot wall?

At 16 inch centres: 144 inches ÷ 16 = 9 bays, so 10 studs to close both ends. Add 2 per corner and about 6 per door or window on top of that.

What does 16 inches on centre mean?

The distance from the centre of one stud to the centre of the next is 16 inches — so the clear gap between them is 14½ inches for a 2x4. Measuring gap-to-gap instead of centre-to-centre is a common way to end up with sheathing edges floating in mid-air.

Why is 19.2 inches a standard spacing?

Because it divides a 96 inch sheet into exactly 5 bays, so panel edges still land on studs. It uses fewer studs than 16 inch centres while keeping the sheathing module. It is the black diamond marking on a tape measure.

How do I find studs in an existing wall?

Start at a corner or an outlet — outlets and switches are nailed to the side of a stud — then measure 16 inches to find the next. A magnet will locate the drywall screws, which is usually more reliable than a cheap electronic stud finder.
