How to use the footing calculator

Footings spread a structure's load onto the soil, so they are sized by width and depth rather than by eye. Add up the total run of your footing trenches, enter the cross-section, and this calculator returns the concrete volume with a waste allowance built in.

What this calculator assumes

Every estimate depends on figures that vary by supplier and conditions. These are the ones used here, so you can sanity-check the result against your own quote.

  • Bag yields are the manufacturer's published figures: 0.30 cu ft for a 40 lb bag, 0.375 for 50 lb, 0.45 for 60 lb and 0.60 for 80 lb.
  • Cured concrete is taken as 150 lb per cubic foot (about 4,050 lb per cubic yard).
  • A waste allowance is included in the volume shown. Ready-mix suppliers usually have a minimum order and charge for short loads.
  • Trench walls are assumed to be clean and vertical. Hand-dug trenches in loose soil over-excavate significantly, which is why the default waste allowance here is 15% rather than 10%.
  • Footing size and reinforcement are governed by local building code and soil bearing capacity. This calculator sizes the concrete for dimensions you provide; it does not design the footing.

Frequently asked questions

How wide and deep should a footing be?

A common residential rule is a footing twice the width of the wall it carries and at least as deep as the wall is thick — but the governing numbers are your local frost depth and the soil's bearing capacity, both of which are set by code. Check with your building department before you dig.

How do I work out total footing length?

Measure along the centreline of each trench run and add them together. For a rectangular building, use the perimeter measured at the footing centreline rather than the outside face, or you will over-order by roughly the footing width at each corner.

Can I pour footings and a slab at the same time?

Yes — that is a monolithic or thickened-edge slab, and it is common for sheds, garages and additions in mild climates. It saves a pour and eliminates a cold joint. In deep-frost regions, code usually requires separate frost-depth footings.

How many 80 lb bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

Forty-five. An 80 lb bag yields 0.60 cubic feet and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. That is around 3,600 pounds of bags to mix by hand — past roughly 1 cubic yard, ready-mix or a rented mixer stops being optional.

Should I order ready-mix or mix bags myself?

Bags make sense up to about half a cubic yard — post holes, small pads, repairs. Beyond that, ready-mix is cheaper per yard, far faster, and gives a consistent mix with no cold joints. Most suppliers have a 1 yard minimum plus a short-load fee.

How much extra concrete should I order?

Ten percent is the usual allowance. Subgrade is never perfectly flat, forms bow slightly, and running short mid-pour forces a cold joint you cannot undo. If your slab is deep or the subgrade is rough, go to 15%.
