How to use the paver sand calculator

Paver sand comes in two forms that are not interchangeable: coarse bedding sand for the 1 inch levelling layer, and polymeric sand for the joints. This calculator sizes the bedding layer by volume and bags, and the notes below cover joint sand.

What this calculator assumes

Every estimate depends on figures that vary by supplier and conditions. These are the ones used here, so you can sanity-check the result against your own quote.

  • Bulk density is assumed to be about 2,700 lb per cubic yard. Loose material varies with moisture and how finely it is ground, so treat the weight as an estimate.
  • One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Suppliers almost always sell loose material by the cubic yard.
  • Results include whatever waste allowance you entered. Bag counts are rounded up.
  • Sizes the bedding sand layer only. Polymeric joint sand is separate — one 50 lb bag typically fills the joints of 75 to 100 sq ft of standard pavers, or 30 to 50 sq ft for wide joints and flagstone.
  • Use coarse concrete or bedding sand, never play sand or mason sand. Rounded fine grains will not lock up and the pavers will rut.
  • Dry sand is taken as roughly 2,700 lb per cubic yard.

Frequently asked questions

How much sand do I need under pavers?

A 1 inch layer, which is about 0.083 cubic feet per square foot — so one cubic yard of sand covers roughly 325 square feet. On a 200 square foot patio that is around 0.6 cubic yards, or about 33 fifty-pound bags.

What is the difference between paver sand and polymeric sand?

Bedding sand is plain coarse sand that goes under the pavers so you can level them. Polymeric sand contains binders that harden when wetted and goes in the joints between pavers, where it locks them together and resists weeds and ants. Using bedding sand in the joints means sweeping it back in every year.

Can I use play sand under pavers?

No. Play sand is fine and rounded — the grains roll past each other under load instead of interlocking, so pavers set on it develop ruts and rocking within a season. Ask for concrete sand, bedding sand or ASTM C33 sand.

How do I measure my area for paver sand?

Measure the length and width in feet at the widest points and multiply them. For an irregular bed, break it into rectangles, circles and triangles, calculate each one separately and add the results together. Rounding up slightly is safer than rounding down.

Should I order bulk or bags?

Bulk is almost always cheaper per cubic yard once you need more than about 1 cubic yard — roughly 54 bags. Bags win when you need a small amount, have nowhere to dump a pile, or want to spread the job over several weekends.

Will a cubic yard fit in my pickup truck?

A half-ton pickup can usually carry about 1 cubic yard of light material like mulch, but only around half a cubic yard of wet soil or gravel because of the weight. Check the weight figure above against your vehicle's payload rating before you load up.
